A New Rebel Alliance

You should read this essay: "I'm currently a life member of the John Birch Society and formerly served on the staff of the organization for 13 years. So why should any left-winger reading this care a fig about what I have to say? Because of a conversation I had with another conservative magazine writer recently. In frustration at the unconstitutional excesses of the Bush administration, I blurted out to him: "The only people doing any good out there are the people at Air America." I expected to shock him with the statement, but his two-word reply shocked me: "And MoveOn.org."

I've heard similar views from some of my conservative friends. The current occupant of the White House seems to have gone pretty far off the tracks with regard to traditional conservative principles.

To my mind, we need to not only be continuing our fight over the uncommitted center, but also making overtures toward the Republicans' libertarian sector.

A vote that switches from Red to Blue carries twice as much weight as an undecided voter whom we convince to register & to vote.

A useful strategy would be to further drive home the wedge that's developed among conservatives over expansion of government power & curtailment of civil liberties. If we can position ourselves as the party which preserves individual liberties when they are threatened by an imperial Presidency.
